A river-smooth shell that opens to a low, warm light.

Barnacle Table is a table piece: an opaline core in a clear hand-blown casing, lit by a warm low-voltage LED with an in-line dimmer. The cloth cord is semi-rigid and takes a set, so the piece sits where you put it and holds the line you give the cord.

Blown and cast by hand in a natural mould. Dimensions, colour and texture vary from the photographs; no two pieces match, including yours.

Story

Where the hanging pieces are all texture, the Table is all surface, a clear casing drawn smooth over a soft peach core. The opening isn't cut; it's where the glass folded back on itself as it set.

Off, it reads as river-glass. On, the core warms and the whole shell seems to hold a single low light.

The light

A warm low-voltage LED sits where the cast runs thickest. The glass does the shading: thick sections go deep and quiet, thin sections go bright, and the bark's texture decides which is which.

It is house light, not task light. Hang it low over a table or alone in a hallway and let the wall carry the glow. It is happiest at dusk and after.

There is nothing to maintain. Dust it when you think of it.
